Don't be looking for the Dupont Company sales rep the next
time you visit a Plastic Surgeon's office because, despite
popular belief, there's no "Plastic" in Plastic Surgery. The
name is taken from the Greek word "plastikos" which means to
"mold or shape."
Initially plastic surgery procedures were limited to facial
and body reconstruction caused by accidents, trauma, illness
or birth defects. As people began to see the purely cosmetic
possibilities, many surgeons expanded their services to
include facelifts, rhinoplasty (nose jobs), breast
augmentation and liposuction.
It's important to know the difference between plastic
surgery and cosmetic surgery, especially if you're planning
on having your insurance company foot the bill for your
procedure.
Cosmetic surgery is performed solely to improve a person's
outward physical appearance and self-esteem by correcting
naturally occuring conditions that the patient is unhappy
with. Cosmetic surgery may be performed by either a Plastic
Surgeon or a Cosmetic Surgeon. Cosmetic surgery is generally
not covered by health insurance.
Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed to correct or
reduce the effects of congenital defects, accidental trauma
injury, infections, tumors, and other health-related
conditions. It's primary purpose is rarely to simply improve
appearance except for extreme cases involving major facial
or bodily damage resulting from automobile accidents, etc.
Plastic Surgery may only be performed by a Plastic Surgeon.
In most cases insurance does pay for plastic surgery
although there are some cases where your claim may be
reduced or denied completely. That's why it is always
important to coordinate the planned procedure with your
health insurance provider BEFORE you get the procedure.
Often times the difference between whether or not your
insurance company will cover the bill is the REASON for the
procedure. If, for example, you are having your nose
reshaped because you're unhappy with your profile -- no
deal. You're on your own. However, get that same nose job
because your doctor has diagnosed a chronic breathing
problem that results in the potentially dangerous condition
known as "Sleep Apnea" and you could end up with a new nose
courtesy of your health insurance provider!
If you are planning to visit a Plastic Surgeon, keep the
following items in mind:
Your plastic surgeon should be "Board Certified" by the
American Board of Plastic Surgery;
If your doctor will be using anesthesia then make sure that
only a licensed Anesthesiologist administers the medicine
and make sure that the facility where the procedure is being
performed is accredited by at least one of the following
organizations:
American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery
Facilities(AAAASF)
Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC)
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO)
Although making sure that all of these certifications are
present is no guarantee of a trouble-free experience, NOT
having these certifications means that both the doctor
performing plastic surgery, as well as the people who run
the facility, have a serious lack of regard for your health
and well being! You should NEVER use an uncertified plastic
surgeon or facility. The risk is simply not worth it.

Stress Following Your Plastic Surgery
Author: Ricardo Silva
Plastic surgery produces such amazing results that many people fail to take into account what is involved in the process. This can lead to unnecessary stress following a procedure.
Stress Following Your Plastic Surgery
The purpose of plastic surgery is really two fold. It is to improve an aspect of your body that you are unhappy with on a daily basis. By so doing, plastic surgery should also add to your mental well being since you are addressing some aspect of your body that makes you unhappy. While this sounds straightforward, many patients fail to seriously focus on what is going to occur during and after the procedure. This can lead to extreme stress and unhappiness following it.
Assume you have always hated the appearance of your nose. For the purpose of this example, we will assume you have a large nose with a significant bump along the ridge. Frankly, people stare at it when talking to you and it makes you very self-conscious. You live with it for years, but finally decide to have something done. After selecting and consulting with a cosmetic surgeon, you have the procedure. Immediately following the procedure, you awake to pain. A look in the mirror shows massive swelling, black eyes and a face you barely recognize. Shock, fear and stress immediately set in. This occurs despite the fact your surgeon told you what to expect after the surgery.
Plastic surgery is not like buying a new car. You do not get to show it off immediately. Unless it is a very minor procedure, you are not going to look good immediately afterwards. Surgeons tell patients this, but the advice is often disregarded. Why? Patients tend to focus on the result they expect and are very happy about finally doing something about whatever it is that bothers them.
It is vital to understand that most plastic surgery procedures are invasive. This means the body suffers trauma to some extent. A mere incision is considered trauma. When the body experiences this, it reacts to protect and heal the problem area. Depending on the procedure, this can mean blood will be rushed to the area. This will present as bruising and swelling. It is going to happen, so you need to prepare yourself mentally for it. The presence of bruising and swelling does not mean your surgeon made a mistake. It is a natural process.
If you are going to have plastic surgery, you need to understand the recovery process is going to take time. How much? Your surgeon can tell the answer for your specific procedure. Regardless, it is important that you not stress out or judge the results during the recover period. You should only do this after the bruising is gone and the swelling resolved.

Minimally-Invasive Chin Rejuvenation Procedure Helps Patients Look Slimmer and Younger
Author: Content Desk Distribution Service
(ContentDesk) June 12, 2006 -- Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery is offering a transformational minimally-invasive procedure known as The Rodeo Drive Chin Rejuvenation, for patients who are tired of seeing that double chin staring at them in the mirror; no matter how much they exercise or how much weight they lose. "It's not a big procedure, but it can make a big change in a person's appearance," explains Dr. Lloyd Krieger, the Medical Director of Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery Center. In the past, patients would need a facelift to deal with this problem but now the Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery Center offers this unique chin lipo procedure that is effective, minimally-invasive, has little downtime and successfully addresses the problem of the annoying "turkey neck." According to Dr. Krieger, who has been featured in Fortune, The New York Times, Access Hollywood and other media outlets, this unique chin and neck liposuction procedure can dramatically improve a person's appearance with minimal downtime and less risk of scaring.
The Chin Liposuction procedure, compared with the routine facelift, is more affordable, easier to recover from and can have remarkable benefits for the ideal candidate. Although the Chin Liposuction is ideal for both men and women, Dr. Krieger says men, who often fight an uphill battle with their double chin look, can particularly benefit from this procedure. The Rodeo Drive Experience: Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery is the first and only plastic surgery center on Beverly Hills' ultimate address, Rodeo Drive. With its boutique offices and the surgery center situated in a location that is known as the capitol of fashion, style, and opulence.
Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery is Beverly Hills' most elegant of medical facilities, featuring state-of-the-art exam rooms, marble counter tops, bamboo floors, and leather chairs. Dr. Krieger has established a unique professional network to offer his patients a lifestyle design, which may include a new wardrobe at nearby Rodeo Drive shops, a new hairstyle, spa treatments, and a new fitness regime. Dr. Krieger, who attended medical school at the University of Chicago and completed his residency at UCLA, maintains operating privileges at the UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
"Because cosmetic surgery is elective, people are looking for a first-class experience, and that's what we offer at our center," Dr. Krieger concludes, "we designed our center to combine the convenience of storefront shopping with what I call the 'Four Seasons treatment'.".

Hyaluronic Acid - Beauty Wave of the Future?
Author: Jana Willinger
In our continuing search for the fountain of youth, there is a new weapon. Hyaluronic acid (HA), a key component of human tissue, aiding the body's flexibility, mobility and moisture retention, is emerging as a key ingredient in many anti-aging beauty products and as a viable alternative to collagen and related substances in injection procedures. As we age, the Hyaluronic acid levels in our body decrease, contributing to the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and dryness in the skin. Hyaluronic acid beauty products and injections can decrease the appearance of lines and wrinkles by replenishing the body's natural supply of Hyaluronic acid and/or by stimulating the body to rejuvenate its own supply of HA.
Among the exciting new developments in the world of Hyaluronic acid products is the recent FDA approval of Restylane and Hylaform, facial injections containing Hyaluronic acid. These injections can be administered quickly and with little chance of side effect. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more people than ever are choosing to forgo invasive plastic surgery for less painful, less time consuming procedures. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) predicts that in 2005, Hyaluronic acid (Restylane, Hylaform) will surpass collagen as the most popular soft tissue filler for lines and wrinkles. The Society also predicts that additional Hyaluronic acid products developed specifically for facial volume enhancement and for improvement of depressed scars will be introduced.
Currently, Hyaluronic acid injections are most commonly used around the mouth and on forehead wrinkles and smile lines and to enlarge, moisturize and "plump" lips. The entire injection process takes less than an hour, and requires repeat treatments every four months to a year. Hyaluronic acid treatments are more expensive than those using collagen (a syringe of Restylane or another Hyaluronic acid product might cost up to $500 as compared to around $373 for collagen) but HA injections last longer because they help the skin retain natural moisture. When injected, the filler plumps up the skin by allowing it to attract and hold water. Side effects are much less likely with Hyaluronic acid than with collagen contributing to its attractiveness as an alternative treatment.
The possibilities seem endless for uses of Hyaluronic acid. In Japan, Daikin Industries is even offering an air conditioner that emits Hyaluronic acid from the filter to moisturize skin. There are sure to be even more innovations and future ways to take advantage of Hyaluronic acid's many health and beauty benefits.

Breast Augmentation
Author: Awinita Smith
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States Known within the medical world as augmentation mammoplasty; breast augmentation refers to a surgical procedure in which the size and shape of a person's breast tissue are enhanced through the implementation of breast implants.
There are many reasons behind breast surgery. One may want to correct disproportionate look of the body or may be having problems with breast.
Breast augmentation surgery will not improve nipple asymmetry, move your breasts closer together, lift droopy breasts, or remove stretch marks.
There is no clear-cut answer to how much breast augmentation costs. Breast augmentation costs will vary from city to city depending on the availability of board certified plastic surgeons that perform this treatment.
Breast aesthetics are important to all women. In order to have breasts which fit your body size and shape, you may consider a breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction.
Breast reduction is an operative procedure in which breast tissue and excess breast skin are removed. The removal of breast tissue results in a smaller breast. Removal of excess skin results in a breast that is higher on the chest wall and more aesthetic. This is an important component of this operation, because it allows the breast to be restored to a youthful appearance and shape. If excess skin were not removed, the breast would actually look worse following breast reduction than before surgery.
The only drawback to removing excess skin is that it necessarily causes scars. Fortunately, the scars can be limited to areas that are hidden when you are wearing a bra - they are located around the nipple, below the nipple, and along the crease beneath the breast. The scars fade after surgery, but it can take years for them to do so.
Many men strive to develop their pectoral muscles for a look of bulk and projection. Some men work out extensively and are still unable to develop the pectoral muscles that they hope to achieve. Fortunately for them, it is possible to enlarge the appearance of their chest muscles (pectoralis muscles, "pec" muscles, or simply "pecs") by placing solid silicone implants.
